John Mitchell

I have learned a great deal during my service on the USD 497 Board of Education.  I began my board term in July 2005, and when I was elected, many of the district’s challenges were directly related to school finance.  While funding is still tight we have been able to increase employee compensation each school year.  While there is still not enough money to allow us to do everything we would like, things are looking better on some fronts.  Specifically, the district was able to fund an all-day kindergarten program in eight elementary schools, and we were able to reduce pay-to-ride student transportation fees.  For the most part. our secondary school construction projects are finished or nearly so.  Portable classrooms have been eliminated from these facilities, and these learning environments are top-notch.

We have much to be proud of in our Lawrence schools.  Our school district continues to be recognized as one of the very best in the nation; our students continue to win many state and national academic competitions and awards; and our student athletes continue to win championships.  It takes a collaborative effort to ensure student success at all levels.  To this end, I encourage your involvement.  Whether or not you have children enrolled please visit our schools, volunteer time and offer encouragement to our students, teachers, staff and administrators.  It does make a difference.

For those of you who do not know me I have lived in Lawrence for more than 30 years.  My wife is an elementary teacher in the district and our daughter and son attend Free State High and Quail Run Elementary, respectively.  My educational and professional background includes two degrees from the University of Kansas (B.A.— Biology and Microbiology, and M.S. – Environmental Health Science) and more than 27 years in state government, working for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.  I have served on the board of directors of the Lawrence Community Theatre, as school carnival chair, as an active PTO member (including serving as co-president), on Site Council (including one year as co-chair), and other school and district-related activities.  This year I will serve as board liaison to three schools: Hillcrest, Woodlawn and Lawrence High School, on the fringe benefits committee and on the equity council.

Finally, as a state employee, I learned a number of years ago that those with a problem are generally more vocal than those who are satisfied with the status quo.  Regardless of your perspective, your input in the public process is always important.  My fellow board members and I all want what’s best for our public school students.  Your participation matters a great deal.  Please let me hear from you.
