Thanks to the community's support of an April 2005 school bond issue, a replacement facility for the original South Junior High, built in 1968 and open 1969-2007, opened its doors on August 20, 2007, on the same campus. South is located in south central Lawrence on 12 acres of land donated by the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs through the Haskell Institute (now Haskell Indian Nations University), The school serves approximately 600 students in grades seven through nine.

Did You Know? The new South Junior High School, designed by Gould Evans Associates, earned the American Institute of Architects' Citation for Excellence in Architecture (2007).
